The Bullis School, a "Powered by Clean Currents" customer, has already been recognized by the EPA Green Power Partnership as a top individual school for green power for neutralizing their carbon footprint by supporting wind farms when they pay their electric bill. In the recently released top 20 K-12 school ranking, Bullis placed 4th after three school districts. Now, the Bullis is taking its commitment to greening its facilities a step further, by installing a huge 110 KW solar system on the Blair Family Arts Center with the help of Clean Currents Solar. The install began just before Thanksgiving, when a semi truck with over 500 panels was unloaded and the panels lifted to roof. Now, as the install nears completion, the excitement about the system is building. Among them are Lee and Jason of the Clean Currents team - both are proud alumni of The Bullis School.
Once the system is installed, it will generate around 20% of the building's electricity needs, which is significant because the large building uses about a third of the total electricity on the Bullis campus. In addition, the project will help educate students about sustainability efforts at the Bullis School as well as the science of solar energy. Teacher Brittany Reed, is planning on incorporating the system into her curriculum. Students in her 9th grade and AP physics classes will be able to learn about how photovoltaics transform light into energy and monitor the system online.
According to Ms. Reed, "The idea is to get them to see that what we're learning is more than just equations and problems we see on a sheet, that there's actually real world applications for them...They always want to know, 'Why do we care about this?' This is one thing we have at our school that gives us that connection."
