How can I switch to wind power?
Clean Currents allows people in Maryland, Washington DC, and Pennsylvania to go carbon-neutral. We do this by bundling standard electricity from the Mid-Atlantic grid with Renewable Energy Credits (“RECs”) produced by wind turbine farms situated across the country. This bundled product is supplied by Washington Gas Energy Services. By choosing wind power for your home through Clean Currents you are helping to decrease your carbon footprint by offsetting the emissions from your electricity use with clean renewable wind power.
If I switch to Clean Currents, does my electric utility no longer serve me?
Maryland, Pennsylvania, and DC are deregulated energy states. This means that you can choose your electricity provider. However, your local utility will always remain your electricity distributor, no matter what supplier you choose.
What happens if there is a power outage?
Your local electric utility remains responsible for all maintenance and outages. If there is an outage in your area, please call your local electric utility.
Will I lose power if the wind turbines stop spinning?
NO! Power to your house will be as reliable as it's always been. Clean Currents simply bundles your current energy usage with renewable energy credits from wind farms across the USA. Your house will still draw from the same regional grid as before.
Who will bill me?
You will continue to get one monthly bill from your local utility. You will see a notation on your bill that indicates you are a Clean Currents customer.
What happens if I move in the middle of my contract?
If you move in the middle of the contract, you will not face any penalty. You cannot, however, re-enroll at your new property under your old plan. If you choose to enroll at your new property, you will be required to sign up as a new customer.
What is the penalty if I cancel my contract?
There will be an early termination fee of the greater of $200 OR $20 per month for each month remaining in contract term. Fee is waived if cancellation is due to customer change of residence. Contact WGES to get offical ruling if issue occurs. Early termination fees have changed over time, refer to the policy at the time you signed up.
Where are the wind farms that Clean Currents gets its wind energy from?
Clean Currents purchases RECs (Renewable Energy Credits) on the wholesale market from wind farms across the United States.
What are RECs?
Renewable power generation creates actual power in the form of electricity, and environmental benefits to society from “green” power production – such as minimizing pollution and slowing the rate finite fuel resources are used. The actual power is sold into the local grid, and the societal benefits are sold in the form of Renewable Energy Credits or “RECs”, sold separately as a commodity into the marketplace. While RECs are not actually a measure of power, each REC represents one megawatt hour (MWh) of renewable-generated energy. For each REC purchased the customer is able to claim the equivalent MWh of energy reduction as on offset to their conventional energy use. For more information on RECs and how they work, go to www.epa.gov/greenpower.
How can I be assured that Clean Currents wind power really makes a difference?
When you purchase your power through Clean Currents, you are making a direct contribution to helping the environment. Clean Currents purchases national wind energy RECs and bundles them with your home's electricity use. The aggregate demand of all Clean Currents customers is substantial enough to make a real difference in promoting wind power development across the nation.
Is switching to Clean Currents all I need to do to help the environment?
While it is a good first step, there are many other actions you can take to lessen your impact on the earth. You can start by reducing your total carbon footprint by driving less/getting a more fuel efficient vehicle, buying locally grown food when possible, and reducing your home’s energy use. It’s also important to contact your elected officials and urge them to support progressive pro-environment legislation. We are not going to solve global warming by small deeds alone. We need to change our laws at all levels of government and adopt a workable international agreement. Finally, encourage the businesses where you work or shop to use clean energy and be part of the solution.
