Free, Environmentally-Friendly Lighting in the Philippines: "Solar bulbs" made with soda bottles and water.

Have you heard about this green project?  What a remarkable green and sustainable innovation originally developed by students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)!

The Liter of Light campaign (run by MyShelter Foundation) brings free, environmentally-friendly lighting  with "solar bottle bulbs" to poor communities in the Philippines.  These low-cost solar bulbs (made with recycled soda bottles and filtered water) are installed in houses that typically lack windows and often lack electricity--these communities are living in darkness even during the day!

Here are some images from the Liter of Light website:

To make a solar bottle bulb, start by simply filling a clear plastic soda bottle with filtered water and a little bleach (as an anti-bacterial agent).  Then embed the bottle in metal roofing and install it in the roof of the house with part of the bottle inside and part of the bottle outside the roof.  The light shines through the bottle, with the filtered water acting as a prism to deliver lighting to the house. Voila! Complete green energy, lighting up windowless homes during the day, just as bright as a traditional light bulb.  Amazing!

Be sure to check out the official Liter of Light video; browse the Liter of Light website for pictures, vdieos, events and instructions on how to make solar bulbs, volunteer, or donate; and click here to "like" the Liter of Light facebook page!

I'm like many mothers I know, concerned about the planet our kids will inherit and overwhelmed by daily life. Clean Currents made it simple and affordable to switch to 100% wind power, without breaking my back or the bank.
