Maryland House Economic Matters Committee votes to kill the Consumer Protection Bill

The Electricity Consumer Protection & Consumer Education bill, sponsored by Del. Al Carr of Kensington, Maryland was killed in the House Economic Matters Committee earlier this week.

Clean Currents backed this bill as we recognized the potential peril that a deregulated electricity market can present to consumers.  The goal of this bill was to increase consumer awareness about electric choice as well as help alleviate consumer confusion as a result of some supplier practices - a laudable goal that we were eager to put our weight behind.

However, other energy suppliers in the state, including WGES, voiced strong opposition to the measure, which would have given consumers more power in dealing with energy companies and provided better information for consumers to make more educated decisions.

Clean Currents would like to thank the following committee members who voted for this important bill, and in doing so stood up for consumers and supported a strong energy market in Maryland: Del. Ben Kramer, Del. Ben Barnes, Del. Tom Hucker, Del. Aisha Braveboy, and Del. Brian Feldman.
