Georgetown Museum Now Powered by Wind

Dumbarton House Purchases 100% Wind Power Through Clean Currents

(Washington, DC – August 15, 2011) – Clean Currents, a leading wind power supplier in the Mid-Atlantic, today announced it has successfully helped the circa 1800 Dumbarton House in Washington, D.C., purchase enough wind power to meet 100% of its energy needs.

“It’s wonderful to see Dumbarton House going green with Clean Currents wind power. Here you have this stately, historic house museum in one of the oldest neighborhoods in the country, choosing to purchase twenty-first century wind power for its energy needs. This is what the clean energy movement is all about,” said Ron Rodriguez, Vice President of Business Development at Clean Currents.

Dumbarton House’s purchase of nearly 150,000 kilowatt hours (KWh) of wind power, an amount enough to power fifteen homes for one year, is equivalent to offsetting over one-hundred tons of carbon-dioxide (CO2) emissions. Cultural Tourism DC, of which Dumbarton House is a member, helped to arrange the purchase.

“As a valuable cultural resource in our community, we were looking for opportunities to be a better steward of our environment beyond the basics of changing to CFL bulbs and using recycled paper products” said S. Scott Scholz, Museum Curator of the Dumbarton House. “Dumbarton House, in its earliest years as a small urban farm on the Heights of Georgetown, was about as self-sufficient, economical, and environmentally green – as we understand it today – as it gets. Using wind power helps us to honor the practical past of our own carbon footprint while helping to sustain the future of the planet.”

The wind power purchase by Dumbarton House adds to the growing list of Clean Currents wind power customers in Washington, DC, which was recently recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as the nation's leading Green Power Community in terms of collective purchase of green power.
