Rockville Based Energy Company Wins “Innovative Green Service” Category in Bethesda Magazine’s Annual Green Awards

(Rockville, MD – Oct. 13, 2011) – Bethesda Magazine, in partnership with Bethesda Green, honored Clean Currents at its second annual green awards last night.  Chosen from over 100 nominations, Clean Currents was recognized for its innovation in green products and services.     

Seven categories comprised this year’s awards, including businesses and non-profits that create innovative green products or services, businesses and non-profits that have incorporated green practices into their operations, communities that are promoting green practices, and individuals (above and below age 18) that have promoted green lifestyles.    

“We are honored to be recognized by Bethesda Magazine and Bethesda Green as a green innovator.  Our central mission at Clean Currents has always been to promote a green lifestyle to as many people in the Mid-Atlantic as possible.” said Gary Skulnik, President and Co-founder of Clean Currents.  “Through our involvement with the communities in which we operate and by providing an affordable and certified green wind power product, we believe that we are breaking down the barriers of entry to a more sustainable lifestyle.”

Other groups and individuals recognized for their green efforts include the Rock Creek Conservancy, Congressional Bank, Brookside Gardens, Bullis School, Piney Branch Elementary School’s green club, and Mike Tidwell of the Chesapeake Climate Action Network.  

“This award serves as recognition of the work that we have been embarking upon since our founding at Clean Currents,” said Skulnik.  “But it’s still great to be recognized by your peers and community members!”

Congressional Bank won “Category 3” of Bethesda Magazine’s 2011 Green Awards.  Category 3 is defined as: “Businesses that have significantly incorporated green practices into their culture and operations.”  Congressional Bank has been a Clean Currents customer since November of 2007.  It's committed itself to eco-friendly and sustainable practices.  From their efforts to recycle, promote paperless banking, and integrate sustainability practices throughout their operations, Congressional Bank was awarded the first Montgomery County Green Certification awarded to any bank in the county.  To top it off, their efforts have even extended to focus on lending to companies that generate eco-friendly solutions to their customers.

Bullis School won “Category 5” of Bethesda Magazine’s 2011 Green Awards.  Category 5 is defined as: “Communities (neighborhoods, schools, condo associations, faith-based organizations, etc.) that are promoting and implementing green practices.”  Bullis School, a Clean Currents customer since January of 2009, has achieved some serious green milestones.  With an impressive 540 solar panels and 100% wind energy purchased for the rest of its energy needs, the school stands out as a renewable energy leader.  The Bullis Community Garden currently grows 30 different types of crops and environmental awareness and education is integrated throughout the schools curriculum at all grade levels.  With a ranking from the U.S. EPA Green Power Partnership Program as 4th in the country for its use of renewable energy, Bullis School definitely deserves an A+ for its incredible environmental efforts.
