Lobbying for a Better Planet
Voluntary actions like switching to wind power at home are a great place to start, but in order to tackle global climate change coordinated legislative action aimed at changing the rules of the game are required. This is why Clean Currents actively supports progressive legislation on the local, state, and federal levels. We work closely with respected environmental advocacy groups such as Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN), the Maryland League of Conservation Voters, and Efficiency First, to help advance environmental and clean energy goals.

Past Legislative Highlights:
- Gary Skulnik was one of the architects of the Maryland and DC Renewable Portfolio Standards which have been instrumental in driving the growth of the clean energy industry in the region
- Clean Currents was a strong supporter of efforts to examine the serious environmental impact of drilling in the Marcellus Shale region of Pennsylvania and Maryland for natural gas. Read our Pennsylvania Brief on Marcellus Shale gas fracking
- Clean Currents was the only electricity company in Maryland that supported the Maryland Offshore Wind Act, which put in motion offshore wind development on the Eastern Shore
- Clean Currents has advocated for a more open and fair competitive electricity market in Washington DC, with the aim of giving consumers more options when it comes to their electricity
2012 Legislative Focus:
- Clean Currents is in full support of Governor Martin O'Malley's Offshore Wind Energy Bill. The bill did not pass in the House in last year's session, but with improved cost protection safeguards, we believe that the bill has a much improved chance of being enacted into law this year
- Clean Currents is lending its support to Delegate Alfred Carr and Senator Catherine Pugh with regard to a consumer protection bill aimed at helping protect the competitive electricity market in Maryland by providing consumers with clear rules and protections from energy suppliers that may try to take advantage of them
These are just two of multiple bills that Clean Currents will be working hard to support in this 2012 legislative session. We are proud to lend our support in advocating for laws that will help clean our regional environment, create good green jobs, and protect individuals from corporate bullying.
